2  Excerpts from the J B Nelson Family Historical  Album. J Philip Nelson was born  August 18, 1905.  He grew up with an appreciation of family life and all the challenges and responsibilities that go with it. His Mother, Ellen died when he was 15 and his father John died when Phil was 23.  Being the second of 9 children he felt an extra sense of responsibility to help care for his brothers and sister to keep the family together.  To this day, that feeling of love and concern for one another in the family is a part of the Nelson tradition.

The "gift of a hammer" was evident in Phil's early childhood.  Manual training was a favorite class in school and he excelled in that subject from the very beginning. He became a master carpenter and builder and was known for his fine workmanship.  He was a sticker on detail and insisted that ll construction work be done right, on a solid foundation, straight, square and everything to fit just so. To do it right was a practice he brought into his family life. He taught his children the importance of doing the best work they could and sometimes to put aside the pleasure until the work was done. To be a good worker was not the only value he taught his family. During leisue time at one of the three cottage he owned in his lifetime he taught his children to enjoy the wood and lakes.  Recollections of happy times at the cottages brings back fond memories to his family as well as to many of the Nelson relatives.
Phil worked hard until age 60 when he was diagnosed as having multiple myeloma, a form of bone cancer that did not have a good prognosis. He then retired from work and for seven years he  enjoy his family , relatives, friends and his favorite place   Pine Lake in nearby Wisconsin. He was  positive in his attitude and has hope for the future. He built a large garage at Pine Lake to house all his tool and woodworking equipment so he could keep active making beautiful furniture.

Phil had an interest in community affairs. In a letter from the mayor, city manager and the commissioners the following statement was made:  " During the years he served as a member of the Ironwood Planning commission, he gained many friends throughout our entire community for his friendly manner and intelligent approach to municipal affairs.  Phil will be sadly missed by those who knew him and worked with him during his lifetime in Ironwood."
Most significantly , devotions, worship and being active on the Wesley Methodist Church Board were important to him. He showed his Christian faith in his relationship with other people. In his later years he looked at each day as a special gift from God and he expressed his thankfulness to God that he could experience that day for what it had to offer.
