1 Welcome to my photos page about Arthur Verner Nelson 1911 to 1993 These  photos are from an old album given to me by Karen Peterson at the Nelson Family  Reunion in June 2006. Most pictures were probably taken during the depression and in the 20's and 30's. Many of the pictures precious to Art are unknown.

3 Excerpts from the J B Nelson Family Historical  Album. Ellen and art were both born in Ironwood, MI. They were married in the Nelson Family Home on Lake Street. June 16, 1934.  For a  time they lived in the Lake Street House with the other Nelson brothers and sisters. They had a garden, 1 cow, a hog and some chickens. One of the special pleasures while living on Lake Street was going to Phil's cottage on Lake Gogebic. On one particular trip there Art remembers taking his sisters in his Model T Ford and having to patch  four flat tires along the way.

They moved to Excelsior, MN in 1959 and joined the Excelsior United Methodist church. Art is a Noble Grand at the Odd Fellow  Lodge and Ellen went to  Rebekah Lodge meetings. Art retired after being a carpenter for 40 years. He always liked gardening, fishing, Ice fishing and smoking the fish he caught.. Ellen worked  in a flower shop in Excelsior. She had been with a florist in Ironwood for 18 years. She did a lot of caning in her leisure time and liked to read and work on crafts for the Church and the Lodge. Reunions had been joyful occasions. Especially remembered by all was a reunion at Little  Girls Point where Art became a old hermit, in tattered clothes and visited the reunion group with a long white beard  as he wandered out of the woods. Eventually art emerged from the disguise amid much laughs by grownups and children alike.

Travel to visit other family members put many bright spots in their lives.  The longest trip was to California along with one to the Canadian Rockies with Ellen's sister Josephine Johnson.  One trip was by car to Florida where they visted  Ellens sister. The visited  Arts brother Arnold and his wife Ruth. That trip was with a new car and no flat tires.  Home was in Excelsior MN near daughter Karen and Marlow and grand children Mark and David and their families. Art and Ellen celebrated their golden wedding  anniversary June 24, 1984 the Excelsior United Methodist Church in Excelsior, MN  with 200 friends and relatives attending.

On my birthday May 10, 2008 I wrote Karen Nelson Peterson
"So this evening I didn't really want to work so I started to  play with the 2 old photo albums you so thoughtfully gave me at the last reunion in  2006. I kept most of the  pictures even  though I have no idea who is in the picture or what it is about.   When I get it on the Arthur Verner Nelson Website,  a folder in the www.JBNelsonFamily.com website I will send you the URL and you can contribute a comment from memory or information. The photos will be numbered  AVN1 to AVN114. If they don't copy well enough that number will be deleted.  I will be putting a sticker on each photo."
I am sending this page to a number of JB Nelson Family relative and others. If you  know who any of the people in the photos please send them to me by email so I can put it with the AVN no picture. If you know anything about the tools, clothes or work objects in the picture please send them to me. I will put in a few comments about some of the pictures as I know it. Brian Nelson

Extra Do any of you recall the reunion at Lake  Superior where Art Nelson dressed up as a hobo looking for something at the reunion camp?  Here  is Art being led by Phil Nelson  as he played to the enjoyment and amazement of the children.

18 AVN24  Is this Phils cottage at Lake Gogebic?

AVN25  The wedding announcement mention that Art and Ellen Nelson spent their honeymoon here. I think that Arts other  brothers and sisters spend their honey moon here at Phil Nelson's cottage. I recalled many days here up until I became a teen and we moved our cottage time to Pine Lake. WI.

26   AVN41 Is this a big or little fish or the bait. ?

AVN42 This was some newspaper article. It looks like Art Nelson on the bottom of the right pictures?

AVN44 I think this was Phil and  Elvera's cottage at Lake Gogebic that Phil and his friends built. I am sure Art probably helped a lot on the cabin make out of logs. I recall a live spring under the kitchen floor used for a refrigerator. Not sure if it was piped was from some other location.

AVN46 I don't think these workers liked to work alone. Not sure exactly how much line work Art Nelson did but he did take a lot of pictures about line work.

28 AVN47 Looks like Phil's cottage being built. I understand initially the accessed the lot by water. Then Highway 64 was cut through or maybe was always there in some form. I just don't know.

AVN50 Looks like my Dad  Phil Nelson 2nd from the left. Others had skis on . He may have had snowshoes which he like to use.
